Why do I need a Canadian citizenship certificate?

A Certificate of Canadian Citizenship is acceptable form of proof of Canadian citizenship when applying for a Canadian passport or for a Social Insurance Number. It can be used in Canada to support an application for an enhanced driver's licence, to register to vote, and to access other government services.

Please refer to the options below to determine which documents are required to support your application. Additional documents may be required during the processing of your application.

  • First-time applicants:
    All documentation must be either the original or a clear and legible certified copy. 
    Any original documents submitted directly to Canada will not be returned until processing in Canada is complete. For information on certified true copies and who can certify copies, see the guide for form CIT 0001 – look for the section entitled "Certified true copies".
  • Replacement certificates: If you are applying for a replacement certificate, you must send the original of all previous certificates, as well as any pink transmission copies you still have. However, you may provide photocopies of all other required documents.

1. If you were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent after January 01, 1947:

  • Child's long form birth certificate showing parentage issued by the State Division of Vital Statistics.
  • Two additional pieces of identification (i.e. social security card, driver's license, passport, school identification).
  • Proof of either parent's Canadian citizenship. (i.e. Birth certificate or Certificate of Canadian citizenship B Canadian passport is not sufficient proof)
  • Proof of same parent's U.S. status may be required if parent was born in or left Canada prior to January 01, 1947 (i.e. US Resident Alien card, U.S. Naturalization document)
  • Two photographs according to the photo specifications
  • Fee of CA$ 75.

2. If you are applying to replace your "Certificate of Canadian Citizenship":

  • All original Canadian citizenship certificate(s) and any pink transmission copies or commemorative certificates.
  • Two additional pieces of identification (i.e. driver's license, passport, US social security card)
  • Proof of your U.S. status may be required if you were born in or left Canada prior to January 01, 1947 (i.e. U.S. Resident Alien card, U.S. Naturalization document, U.S. Certificate of Citizenship or U.S. Visa/I-94)
  • Two photographs according to the photo specifications
  • Other documents (marriage certificate, legal name change document, divorce decree)
  • Fee of CA$ 75.


Proof of payment must accompany your application. You may pay your applications fees on-line by credit card.

Note: At the end, do not exit without printing the receipt page. Fill in the Payer Information Section by hand. If more than one member of your family is applying for a Canadian citizenship certificate, pay the fees all together and submit one copy of the receipt with the applications.

Submitting your application

By Mail: You may send your application and supporting documentation directly to the Case Processing Centre in Canada.

Important: US offices will no longer accept Citizenship applications as of September 2nd, 2013.

Exception:  The Consulate General of Canada in New York continues to accept applications for a Proof of citizenship (citizenship certificate) (CIT 0001), Search of Citizenship Records (CIT 0058) or Renunciation (CIT 0302) for Canadian citizens residing in Bermuda.
